For my DSDN 112 project the main sense that I was looking to investigate more about is touch. I wanted to see how people would interact with different types of surfaces. After doing several test with different materials I came up with the conclusion that there is no generic way people will interact with each of the surfaces. No matter how you present it and which ever way the grain of the surface is people will want to interact with it in a means that is natural to the user.  I want the experience of my Multi Surface Board to be unique to the user and for them to use it how they want to. There is not one straight forward way people will interact with it so it can be unique to the user as they will want to do how they feel is right with this object.
I have attached an envelope to my board and inside it there will be a note that states how the people who I tested this experiment on used the board. And will say the they most common way people interacted with the surfaces.

Instruction
The instructions are simple
  1. Put the letter aside and DO NOT OPEN IT BEFORE USE
  2. Run your hand over each of the 6 different surfaces and remember which way you ran your hand over each one
  3. When you have run your hand over all 6 surfaces then you can get the letter and open it and see what it says inside to see if the way you interacted with each surface is the same as other people

Finals

After i finished creating my interaction object I fully tested it and got some strange results.
When I tested my object at university, the results i got showed that most people preferred to run their finger against the grain.

BUT when i tested it at work with more people the results showed that most people preferred to run their finger with the grain.
I was very surprised by the results which i got from this experiment as i thought that most people would have gone against the grain.

Here are my Final 5 photos which i have chosen

I decided to attach a envelope to the board so that i can have a letter inside which says that the majority of people will run their hand with the grain and ask the question if they were apart of the majority

different surfaces

For my final i have decided to use 6 different surfaces.

Wood
Rubber
Sandpaper
Paper
Metal
Clay

For each i am going to have the a different pattern on them and i am hoping that people will interact with them all differently

I am hoping that all of the textures would be interacted with differently and will prefer to either go against the grain which is in the rubber surface is going left to right or with the grain which would be top to bottom

So for my new project i am going to be testing how people interact with different surface textures when there is a straight line pattern on them.

Here id the layout of what i want my new project to look like. In each of the large box's there is going to be the surface on it. They are going to be approximately either 8cm x 8cm or 10cm x 10cm.
Underneath each of the surfaces where is going to be something which says 'run hand over texture and then flip over' so the user should run their hand over the surface and then they will flip over a piece of paper which will say the statistic of the percentage of people do it in the way in which the grain is

Change in topic

After talking with Angela and Helen I have decided to change my idea for project. I am keeping some parts of it the same but it is mostly going to be changed.

I have completely got rid of the puzzle idea and i am just focusing on the ideas of lines.
When i was talking to Angela about my idea i noticed that she was stroking a pen which had lines which went right around the pen. It was sort of like the image bellow
She was stroking up and down the pen where the lines where. When i asked her if she could do the same but in the direction of the lines she said that it just doesn't feel right compared to the way which she was doing before.

My new idea is to see how people interact with different surfaces which have a series of lines on them. In my original idea i was going to have a segment of my puzzle which would have lines on it directing the user to turn in a specific way, bellow is an image of my experiment for it

Story Board for project 1

StoryBoard

This is my storyboard for DSDN 112 Project

DSDN 112
Project 1
Part A

For my first project for DSDN 112 I am planning on making a combination code box, which will only be able to be opened when the box is in a specific order. The box will be a 3D octagon and will have 6-8 different segments to it. Each of the 8 sides of the octagon will be about 50mm in length and the width of each one will be between 15mm to 20mm. On each segment there will be some sort to texture on it, which I hope will make the user want to turn it in a specific way. In each segment there will be a hole and when all the holes match up something will come out of the box.
To get the box in order the user is going to have to twist each segment of the box to match up the holes.
I am hoping to make the box out of wood and then either engrave each texture into the wood or stick something on it. There will be a metal rod that goes through the center of all of the different segments and washes and nuts on the ends to make sure that the Octagon box will keep its shape and so that none of the segments will fall off.
I am hoping that my model will intrigue the user. Because it is a sort of puzzle and the user will want to complete it.
I think it is going to be exciting for the user because I am adding a reward aspect to the project. And from tests that we did in an earlier tutorial we found out that rewards can be a major part of interaction.
